Robert Worby and Sara Mohr-Pietsch introduce further highlights from this year's Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, including the UK premiere of James Dillon's String Quartet No.6. Apartment House perform Christian Marclay's Graffiti Composition, the result of posting thousands of sheets of blank manuscript paper on the streets of Berlin in 1996; and Switzerland's basel sinfonietta perform Tim Parkinson's Orchestra Piece, part of a concert programme inspired by the work of Cornelius Cardew's Scratch Orchestra of the early 1970s.
And in the latest instalment of the Hear and Now Fifty, original Scratch Orchestra member Howard Skempton recalls his moment of epiphany on encountering Morton Feldman's Extensions 3 for piano. With commentary from music writer Paul Griffiths and excerpts from an archive interview with the composer himself.

Drawing for Scores

Drawing for Scores

The idea that the shape of a sound might be reflected in a graphic shape, or that the use of measuring and geometry can help in the process of understanding musical form in composition, has influenced notation for music and also developed ideas about the process of reading instruction scores in performance.

edges ensemble

The edges ensemble presents a response to Sunday's performance by the Basel Sinfonietta, revealing an alternative perspective upon the composers featured. An alternative orchestra, interdependent and inquisitive musicians, drawn equally to sonic detritus and so-called musical sounds. The edges ensemble is an inclusive collective committed to forging a musical identity through investigation, improvisation and listening, responding to the concerns of experimental composers, old and new.

Poetry as Score

Centre for Creative Collaboration, 16 Acton Street, London, WC1X 9NG
7.30pm (pre-concert discussion 6.30-7pm)

Jürg Frey - Landschaft mit Wörtern (selection) (2003)
Manfred Werder - 2009/4
Michael Pisaro - A single charm is doubtful [harmony series no.14] (2004-6)
Antoine Beuger - Confidential Letter #7 (2011)

Performers: Antoine Beuger, Angharad Davies, Sarah Hughes, Tim Parkinson, Michael Pisaro, David Stent, Carol Watts and Manfred Werder.

As part of Cut & Splice: Grúndelweiser, POLYply presents an evening of Wandelweiser works grounded in poetic texts.

Since its inception in 1992, the Wandelweiser composer collective has created an increasingly influential body of work characterised by its great beauty, economy and focus. International in membership and outlook, the collective includes some of the most striking and individual composers working today. Taking the music and aesthetics of Cage, Feldman and Christian Wolff as starting points, the Wandelweiser composers share an interest in the exploration of compositional process and a common concern for silence and duration.

In recent years, several Wandelweiser composers have taken the text-score innovations of the 60s and 70s in new directions, using poems to guide musical performance in various intriguing ways. In this concert several of these works will performed by an ensemble led by composer Tim Parkinson and featuring some of the UK's most experienced interpreters of the collective’s music. The evening begins with a panel discussion led by Will Montgomery and featuring the composers Antoine Beuger, Michael Pisaro and Manfred Werder.

This event, which kicks off the annual Cut & Splice festival, is the first in a series of POLYprojects – one-off events growing out of Royal Holloway's monthly POLYply poetry and performances series, which is hosted by the Centre for Creative Collaboration in Kings Cross, London.

Poetry as Score is programmed by Will Montgomery and Tim Parkinson. Please not that, although this is a free event, space is limited at the venue so you should arrive in good time to avoid disappointment.
