James Saunders: different water environments (2015)
Set Ensemble play two new pieces created through collaboration between scientists and composers. James Saunders has been working with chemical engineers Mirella Di Lorenzo and Jon Chouler from University of Bath to explore the processes found in microbial fuel cells. Dominic Lash has collaborated with biogeochemist Kate Hendry from University of Bristol to make a piece that engages with palaeoclimate methodology, which uses indirect chemical records to understand the links between past oceans and climate.. The event will include performances of both pieces, prefaced by a short talk by each of the scientists.

Time With People @ City Summer Sounds
Edges presents the London premiere of English composer Tim Parkinson's opera, Time With People, with the same production featured in its sold out performance at hcmf.
Sounds, silences, movements, objects, soloists, chorus; these elements are isolated, intermingled and intensified to confound and concentrate our sense of how they function within and outside of the work itself, which is - following tradition - a collection of works: an opera.

Opera singer Richard Scott explores opera through the prism of various themes. Today Richard talks to the English composer Tim Parkinson about his opera, Time With People, a work which, according to one critic, is 'reconstructing music from the ground up'. Plus composer, poet & performer Sorana Santos who will be performing songs from her new album Our Lady of Stars.

"Behind closed doors" - a series of three meetings of the Nizhny Novgorod unusual public and ensemble NoName-ensemble in the new spaces Arsenal. Name of the project refers to the eponymous play by Jean-Paul Sartre. Each meeting takes place in one of the new premises of the Volga-Vyatka NCCA. In this case, the audience arranged as freely as possible, and the musicians are hidden from view. This makes it possible to limit acute hearing and refers to the type of home listening to music on a CD. Each meeting includes different options for interactivity: discussion, special research tasks for the students.

Drawing towards Sound:Visualising the Sonic is an exhibition curated by David Ryan. It examines the interface between the visual and the aural through notation, documentation, performance and video/moving image. Each of these aspects are currently being explored from many different perspectives by contemporary composers, musicians, visual artists, and film/videographers. Its basic starting point is the historical graphic score/"new" notational practices of the modernist avant-garde and how sound is captured and communicated. It will position these "classic" experimental notations - such as Cage and Boulez - with the output of contemporary composers and visual artists. Highlights will include a complete performance of Cornelius Cardew's 1960s graphic score Treatise, a visit and workshop performance by American experimentalist composer Alvin Curran (b.1938), and a rare chance to see UK performer Anton Lukoszevieze's drawings and films, as well as Icelandic sound artist Hallveig Agústsdóttir's drawing performances.
