symphony (2010)
for: fl (+ auxilliary), vn, vc, auxilliary
This piece is another I have written in which I am fascinated with the combination of what might be called "any" sound (ordinary everyday sound which has little if any prior association with music), with musical sound (i.e. pitches and rhythms conventionally played on instruments). What do they mean when placed next to each other? A note is anyway a very refined sound, refined to enhance the tone quality and to minimise the noise element. In the same way as I accept that any sound can be music, to also then consider these musical sounds as any sounds. Also, to treat instruments as objects; to divide a string and create a sound, irrespective of a tuning system. When does it cease to be any sound and become musical sound? What happens? What is sound and what is music? These are bottomless questions I can't stop thinking about.
